A World Premiere triptych of ideas, stories and legacies by Australian Dance Theatre’s Artistic Director Daniel Riley (Wiradjuri) and Adrianne Semmens (Barkindji). Daniel’s The Third takes as its starting point mulunmaInside Within his 2021 RISING: Melbourne commission which explores the relationship between the Western archive and a First Nations archive, each built on differing ideologies. The Third extends these concepts by looking at the body as an archive and how we hold memories personally and collectively. Immerse dives into the lineage of our waterways and our ancestral connection to fresh and salt water, speaking to the duality that springs from Adrianne’s connection to freshwater as a Barkindji woman, but now calling Adelaide home – saltwater country.

Adrianne Semmens
Adrianne Semmens is a dance practitioner with experience working across the arts, education and community sectors. Adrianne is a descendant of the Barkindji People of NSW and a graduate of NAISDA Dance College and Adelaide College of the Arts.

This year sees Adrianne performing with the South Australian First Nations Dance Collective, led by Artistic Director Gina Rings, and working as an Associate Artist with Australian Dance Theatre, enjoying a focus on her own choreographic practice, which explores themes of identity and place.

Adrianne’s professional experience also includes her role as a Dance Presenter for The Australian Ballet’s Dance Education Ensemble, as a performer for Jo Clancy, Jade Erlandsen and Cathy Adamek, and performances for Dance Rites, choreographed by Kaine Sultan-Babij.

Passionate about dance education and the role of dance in maintaining wellbeing, Adrianne has worked on many youth focused initiatives, including projects for Kurruru Arts and Culture Hub, Carclew, Ausdance SA and the Department for Education.

In August 2020, Adrianne was commissioned by Garry Stewart to work with the ADT dancers for two weeks on the developing material for a new work that explores water in all its manifestations, as part of an Artistic Residency with the company. Whilst in residence with ADT, Adrianne undertook a choreographic exploration centred on water and our relationship to freshwater and saltwater. The exploration recognised water as a basic necessity and source of healing and comfort, but also as capable of exposing our vulnerability. As an Associate Artist with ADT in 2021, Adrianne has expanded on this previous choreographic work and developed the short piece Immerse for the Convergence season in early May 2021.
